The Furies
04-Nov-2011
This summer saw three talented BA (Hons)Jewellery and Silversmithing students from the School of Jewellery, showcasing their work at the world renowned and highly prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Casey Fenn, Ami Victoria Pepper and Yuanying Cai, who all began their studies at the school in September 2010, designed and created wearable pieces for Birmingham based theatre group Kindle to use in their production of ‘The Furies’.
‘The Furies’ tells a tale of lust, adultery, revenge and murder and revolves around three female characters, played by the three core members of Kindle. The students took part in a competition where they designed a piece specifically for one of the characters in the play, and pitched their design to the theatre Group. Though the competition was tough, Kindle were super impressed with the work of these three students in particular, and commissioned them to make their work for the tour of ‘The Furies’ production, which launched at the highly acclaimed Edinburg Fringe Festival in August.
The three fantastic pieces of work produced highlight the fascinating blurring of boundaries between jewellery and other artistic disciplines, such as theatre, fashion and fine art. Ami Victoria Pepper created a pair of latex hand pieces focusing on the erotic and warrior like qualities of her chosen character Agamemnon, played by Kindle member Olivia Winteringham. Yunaying Cai produced a highly polished and intricately structured golden weapon disguised as a head piece for her character, Clytaemnestra played by Sam Fox, to use in her revenge against Agamemnon in the murder scene of the play. Casey Fenn’s piece was designed for Cassandra- Agamemnon’s concubine in the story, played by Emily Ayres. Casey’s piece was constructed from Paper Mache and wire, and burnt and disintegrated to appear like decomposing bones- thus emphasising the rotten core of Cassandra’s character.
‘The Furies’ will continue to tour around the UK, delighting audiences with its fresh and raw approach, as will the work of Ami, Casey and Yuanying.
This competition was part of our students “Live Project” module which takes place during Level 4 of the course. It introduces students to aspects of professional practice, career opportunities and employability.
