Beyond Borders: New York International Gift Fair
10-Mar-2010
Tusheeta David, an Artist in Residence and a former MA graduate from the School of Jewellery was selected by the Crafts Council to exhibit in the United States at the New York International Gift Fair.
She was the youngest business to have been selected to exhibit in the US along with eleven other very well established makers including Polly Wales, Eleanor Pritchard and Emma Burton. Yvonna Demczynska, owner of the Flow Gallery (London) and Design Eyes co-ordinated the project on behalf of the Crafts Council.
The New York Gift International Gift Fair is America’s largest gift fair and takes place twice a year at the Jacob Javits Centre, and the Crafts Council has a section devoted to British crafts in the Handmade section of the fair. Tusheeta was supported by UK Trade and Investment. It was a brilliant experience for her to take her jewellery to new markets beyond the United Kingdom and see the response she received.
On asking her about the experience Tusheeta says ”I feel so privileged even to have been selected by the Crafts Council to represent UK at such a prestigious event only having lived in the UK for four years. The response from the American buyers was amazing and I am so pleased to say that I am now retailing my jewellery at New York’s Madison Avenue in a very established gallery”.
Tusheeta has also been approached by a couple of fashion labels in New York to design and make jewellery collections exclusively for them – a project that she finds both exciting and challenging.
