BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing students from level 4 + 5 + 6 joined forces today to participate in a one day project to question and challenge the concept of a spoon. They had to work together in design teams to design and make a spoon which united a combination of their favourite foods.

THE AIMS of the day and briefing included the following

• To get to know each other and discover something new

• To design and make an object in one day

• To work together in design teams, to develop team working and communication skills

• To challenge conventions and create something that has never been seen before

• To participate in a competition

THE CHALLENGE included

In design teams design and make a “beautiful spoon” which communicates information about the team’s favourite foods. The spoon should visually communicate and combine the 3 key ingredients/favourite foods.

Together they had to consider the following

• What is your favourite food?

• What is a spoon?

• How will you combine together and visually communicate the favourite foods?

• How does it work? How will you use this? Its function?

• What materials will you use?

• How will you work together?

• What is your concept - Be innovative + challenge conventions - ?

The resulting outcomes were displayed in the exhibition hall and teams introduced their concept to each other. Together students secretly judged each spoon resulting in the top 6 designs entered into the secret functional test! This was of course a traditional egg and spoon race!

Here are the results……..enjoy!
