One and Other
08-Oct-2009

Isabella Day is a silversmith and studio jeweller and also really interested in making accessories for homes. She works with precious metals, resin and found or recycled objects. She has a particular fondness for discarded items and finds ways to make them desirable again. She is currently studying at the Birmingham School of Jewellery on the HND course.
She is appearing on the Anthony Gormley's 'One and Other' plinth on October 6th at 8am where she will be using her jewellery making skills to saw pierce and polish a . butterfly pendant that she has started making in her studio at home. On the evening of October 6th she will auction on Ebay the butterfly and the proceeds from that will go to Cancer Research.
She is also raising money by donation on this page: www.justgiving.com/Isabella-Day/ created for people who want to support her but don't wish to participate in the auction.
She says:
"I wanted to go on the One and Other plinth to show that Artisan craftspeople still exist; we are here but in ever decreasing numbers. I think just because society has the ability to constantly mass produce things doesn't mean that's all we should do, we don't seem to celebrate the one-off; the distinct creation any more. In this age of technology we are losing skills; fewer and fewer people are making things with their hands, more and more people are working virtually, doing jobs through computers, sitting at desks. We wear the same factory made clothes bought from shops with ethically dubious credentials and we buy the same jewellery from the same high street chains - we've all got the same Ikea lamp in our house. What happened to individuality? I hope that people will support me in this because I'd really like to make some money for the charity but I also really care about our country's dying crafts tradition and I think going on the plinth is one way I can really contribute to highlighting the subject."
