Watch This Space design competition
08-Jul-2009
BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing students have recently participated in a competition design brief.
Level 4 students were invited to design collections for Spring /Summer 2010 for local jewellery company Watch This Space. Who are renowned for their bold, bright and colourful fashion forward resin jewellery. They regularly exhibit at trade events and also showcase their collections in a number of their own brand retails outlets across the UK called The Jewellery Stop.
This project was part of a core module which offered the students the opportunity to communicate their design ideas in a professional context by interacting with a practicing design company and working in response to a “live” design brief. During this module students were also introduced to aspects of IT software to enable them to design and present their work professionally.
During the briefing session Watch This Space asked the students to design collections in response to identified key trends such as Bohemian Safari, Tribal Deco and Abstract Mosaic. They invited the students to visit their shop in Kings Heath, Birmingham and also took part in a design critique halfway through the project.
The project culminated with students presenting their collections to the company directors. They had just 3 minutes to present their work followed by an opportunity for questions and answers. The company were overwhelmed by the level of professionalism and innovative ideas making the awarding of prize winners incredibly difficult.
After much deliberation in the studio reviewing the design work Watch This Space warded the following prizes.
- 1st Prize of £150.00 awarded to Elizabeth Boyd
- 2nd Prize of £100.00 awarded to Clara Jackson
- 3rd Prize of £50.00 awarded to Christine Davies
The following runners up each received a voucher to spend at The Jewellery Stop
- Andrew Markou
- Olivia Nemeshanyi
- Han Liu
- Joanne Edwards

In addition to these prizes the winners have the opportunity to participate in work experience at the company during next year.
Level 4 coordinator Zoe Robertson comments “This was a fantastic experience for our students, they were incredibly nervous presenting their work to Watch This Space but this resulted in extremely professional presentations coupled with innovative design ideas. I felt very proud of the groups achievements”
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Watch This Space, Victoria Mc Gowan-Smyth, Oliver Mc Gowan-Smyth, Mikaela Lyons, Fiona Ross, Simone Brown, for sponsoring these prizes and their support throughout the project. Also special thanks to visiting lecturer Tusheeta Davies who introduced the students to photoshop, corel draw and powerpoint.
