Sustainable Style
02-Mar-2009
MA graduate Victoria Sewart celebrates her third successful Christmas season with SUSTAINABLE STYLE an exhibition of internationally renowned jewellers working with recycled, natural and found materials.
The exhibition includes 10 new designers, never before shown in Plymouth including graduates Louise Evans and Jo Pond alongside new work from current Victoria Sewart Gallery designers. Materials include vintage and recycled plastics, textiles, paper, wood and PVC, handmade paper and organic materials.
Victoria has recently changed all her packaging to recycled materials, and wanted the exhibition to continue the eco-friendly theme. The result is a fresh and exciting exhibition of jewellery
Victoria says – ‘I’ve made changes in my own lifestyle for eco-friendly living and I wanted to invite jewellers who have made similar choices with their work. These designers show their work all over the world and it’s just great to have them in Plymouth for the Christmas season. The work in my gallery has always been at the cutting edge of jewellery design and this year it just felt right to use the theme of recycling and re-using for all sorts of reasons. We’re all tightening our belts, and I’m sure there’s something for everyone in this fantastic collection.’
The Victoria Sewart Contemporary Jewellery Gallery, Plymouth's first contemporary jewellery gallery, has beautiful contemporary jewellery from over 40 jewellery designers displayed in a modern gallery based in Plymouth's historic Barbican. Unlike conventional jewellers, the gallery showcases an extraordinary range of contemporary work ranging from precious metals to plastics and feathers. With a workbench downstairs, you can often see jewellery being made by the owner Victoria Sewart. Jewellery making classes are also available in the workshop above the gallery.
A successful jewellery designer for over 14 years, Victoria exhibits her work at international trade shows and in galleries throughout the UK. Opening her own gallery was the next logical step for the Devon-based designer. After completing an MA last year, Victoria’s work changed direction and she began making more sculptural fine art pieces using a technique she developed during her studies. This gave her the impetus to establish a gallery to showcase her own work and that of her contemporaries.
“I always wanted to have my own gallery. It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring the best of contemporary jewellery design to a wider audience,” says Victoria.
