“To produce the very best in bold, brave and innovative metalwork design: This was the challenge issued to artists, makers and designers across the UK with the launch of the first Museums Sheffield National Metalwork Design Award.”

Two associates of The School of Jewellery, PHD student Ji Hoon Choi and Artist in Residence Esther Lord, attended the first National Metalwork Design Award, held at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries last night, as two of the twelve shortlisted nominees.

The award is a biennial prize “launched to promote, support and celebrate innovation and excellence in design and craftsmanship for those working in metals”

Ji Hoon’s entry, The Vessels of Wishes, and Esther’s Sail Vessel were exhibited in the Atrium of the Millennium gallery, where both also had work in the Galvanize and Christmas Crackers exhibitions.

“It was very exciting to be selected as finalists for the Award, and to see our work exhibited at such a prestigious event. Having taken a tour of the nearby Persistence Works, with its fantastic starter scheme workshop, and the Metalwork collections at the Millennium Galleries, we could see what an excellent example Sheffield is of what can be achieved with real support and investment into the Creative Industries, and how a city can really make the most of its industrial heritage, as well as its contemporary artists & designers.” Esther Lord
