Birmingham City University Students Gain Highest Number Of Goldsmiths Bursaries
14-Feb-2008
Against national competition, no less than eight Level 3 students on the BA (Hons) Jewellery & Silversmithing course have been awarded Precious Metal Bursaries from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, each worth £200.
The competition is an annual scheme open to all final year degree students across the UK. In November students were asked to submit two dimensional design proposals relating to their work that shows innovative, though appropriate, use of precious metals. The Goldsmiths Company received a total of 177 entries from across 24 institutions. Winning students now have to make up their designs before their final graduating exhibition in June and July’s New Designers show in London. One such successful student, Naomi Jago said “My current work seeks to develop precious qualities from paper. This bursary will enable the ‘preciousness’ to be more appropriate when used with silver”.
Birmingham City University gained the highest number of awarded bursaries; an excellent result, which re-enforces the reputation of the School of Jewellery as the premier centre for this subject.
The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths (www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk ) has been a patron of the craft for seven centuries and is still one of the most significant livery companies in the City of London. Their support for education and training covers many levels and includes sponsorship of the New Designers exhibition, a post-graduate business course, Precious Metal Bursaries and centre-specific funding promoting student use of new technology.
