Birmingham City University Students Gain Highest Number Of Goldsmiths Bursaries

Against national competition, no less than eight Level 3 students on the BA (Hons) Jewellery & Silversmithing course have been awarded Precious Metal Bursaries from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, each worth £200.

With only two weeks to go before Europe’s top athletes descend on Birmingham’s NIA to battle it out for the coveted Bronze, Silver or Gold medals of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, less than a mile way, artists, craftsmen and designers in Birmingham’s historic jewellery quarter are involved in a flurry of filing, polishing and buffing in preparation.

Schmuck, one of the most prestigious international events on the global jewellery scene, will be staged at Birmingham School of Jewellery, part of Birmingham City University from 10 April to 3 May 2008. Having taken place at Munich in March this year, its presence in Birmingham signals a huge honour for the city of Birmingham and Birmingham School of Jewellery, highlighting Birmingham’s importance in the international design arena.

Kathryn’s Next Move

Kathryn Partington is a 2007 MA postgraduate from the School of Jewellery, Birmingham and is currently an artist in resident based at the school. She supported by The Crafts Councils setting up scheme entitled ‘Next Move.’

Lifelines

The LIFELINES installation has been generated by the students of the MA Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Product 2008. The students were asked to identify points in their lives, which have been significant and make 10 objects to represent them. They had to focus on the significance of materials and form and the importance of the use of symbolism – what is symbolism?
