Best of British
26-Mar-2007
To celebrate St Georges Day, students from The School of Jewellery and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design have been invited by the city council to showcase their collaborative creations in a spectacular open-air catwalk. This takes place in Victoria Square on Saturday 21st April 2007 as part of the city’s special events programme.
2nd year students from both BA (Hons) Fashion Design formed design teams such as Team Cosy and Team Custard Cream with students from BA (Hons ) Jewellery and Silversmithing. Working in collaboration for the first time these students were asked to integrate and utilize their specialist skills from each discipline to create hybrid body pieces that blur the boundaries between Jewellery and Fashion.
15 extraordinary creations have been designed and hand made in response to the theme of “Best of British”. The design teams took inspiration from kitsch and colourful traditions such as fish and chips, garden party’s, seaside resorts and the weather. All these creations have been self – financed by the students who have also organized the showcase.
