Switch Me On

20-Nov-2006

Birmingham’s School of Jewellery students created a visual explosion of light and colour to launch this year’s Brilliantly Birmingham, the seventh international festival of contemporary jewellery.

30 of the 2nd year BA(Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing students were invited to organize a performance for the prestigious VIP preview on the evening of 16th November 2006 at the School of Jewellery. The students identified the theme of ‘Light up jewellery’ and each student created a unique and innovate piece of jewellery designed and handmade especially to wear for the performance.

The students choreographed the performance around the theme of ‘Switch me on’ which spectacularly illuminated the pitch-black atrium of the School.  Robotic dance movements were used to create a mesmerising and electrifying sequence to ‘switch on’ and ‘light up’ the jewellery. In addition they wore dramatic makeup to disguise their identity and create a theatrical effect.

Reflecting on the experience students said…
“It was amazing to see that all the rehearsals and hard work paid off, the look on the audience faces was brilliant to see. We all wanted to do it again straight away.” Sian Thody

“It was such a buzz performing in front of an audience, with such a fantastic atmosphere created by the darkness and lights” Ellie Murphy
