Introduction to the Course

Although entitled Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products, this course explores a far greater variety of materials, manufacturing techniques and processes than the name suggests. It has affinities with industrial and fashion design, fine art and sculpture and is influenced by general philosophy, conceptualisation and critical theory.

The course addresses the existing and potential relationships within this sector, and will enable you to recognize, identify, understand and operate within this diversity. A structured project programme encourages you to address vocational and academic research in design by applying your developing abilities and interests to a wide range of issues. Your knowledge and understanding of the subject will be enhanced through considering strategies for concept development and the analysis of design problems. You’ll also look at the relationships between personal objectives, cultural values, market identities, prototyping techniques and new technologies.

Your Learning Experience

You’re provided with shared studio space and have access to all the Schools facilities, which include a library, specialist workshops and computer suite. Lecture theatres, seminar rooms and gallery space are also available for booking. Where appropriate, arrangements can be made for you to access expertise and equipment in the Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC), which offers access to new technologies and technology transfer programs.

Our staff are actively engaged in research, publications, exhibitions, conference contributions and studio practice at an internationally recognised level. In addition you’ll benefit from the artists in residence, who work alongside students and contribute to the MA studio environment.

Career Prospects

On completing the course, you’ll have a number of career choices, which include designer/maker, design consultant, researcher or staff designer with a consultancy or manufacturing company.
